From C++ Hobbyist to Professional – Tatu Loikkanen’s Career Story

Tatu has been working at Symbio for one year as a Senior Software Engineer. He studied embedded systems at the University of Tampere and after graduating started working in the automotive industry, developing UI design software.
Tatu ended up at Symbio by chance when Symbio’s recruiter contacted him just at the right time. As discussions progressed, it became apparent that Tatu could be a suitable match for Symbio’s own product development team. A couple of weeks later, Tatu joined the Elysian team to develop a Linux-based car infotainment system solution.
Tatu’s basic working day mostly includes coding but also various meetings with team members. Tatu lives in Tampere, while the rest of the team is located all over Finland. “I think one of the best things about Symbio is that you can work from anywhere in Finland – or almost anywhere in the world,” Tatu says. However, Tatu points out that another great thing about Symbio is that we get to focus on the development work – i.e. device-oriented software development, “– exactly what I studied at school”.
Elysian’s product is largely a system written in the C++ programming language and Tatu is also an active C++ hobbyist in his spare time. He regularly attends meetings of the Helsinki C++ user group, “I’m actually more interested in the C++ language than just as a basic user and it’s nice to stay on top of the development of the language”, Tatu says. The meetings are attended by people who develop C++ language further which offers the opportunity to meet top professionals of the language, “C++ is an interesting but also very challenging language. This challenge is perhaps what fascinates me the most”, Tatu added.
Tatu also mentions a big positive in that even if he is working with Symbio’s own product development, there would always be an opportunity to jump into a client project as a consultant. Symbio offers versatile possibilities which Tatu considers as a huge benefit. For now, he is strongly motivated by his current work in the Elysian team with the C++ language.
