￼Microsoft Searched for Global Partner to Support Mediaroom IPTV Ecosystem
Our valued client, Microsoft, partners with several hardware makers in order to release their line of Mediaroom IPTV devices to the consumer market. With an expectation of increasing demand, Microsoft sought after a trusted partner to help them test, validate and certify third party hardware vendors for their Mediaroom IPTV set top boxes. They required a partner with a proven track record and advanced skillset in testing and quality assurance for both software and hardware.
The selected team would represent Microsoft in certifying that each of the hardware suppliers meet and exceed the standards set by the MS IPTV team. Although the potential service provider would be an external partner, they would be required to coordinate and certify MS IPTV set top boxes’ Hardware and Software. The service provider is required to provide more than just test services, but also act as a extension of Microsoft and reflect its brand for the hardware makers. The chosen partner had to meet this level of expectations in service and product quality; two areas where Microsoft places extreme focus. As the product demands increased, the need for a scalable partner became even more crucial.
Microsoft chose Symbio having had a positive experience as a partner in testing and quality assurance from past projects. The team had to meet their hiring standards as well as be able to work independently without day-to-day supervision from MS management.
The Symbio Validation Team was carefully constructed using both experienced engineers as well new hires. Located onsite at the Microsoft testing facility in Beijing, they were trained using strict testing and reporting standards, and were expected to develop an effective service relationship with the hardware manufacturers. In addition to strengthening these partnerships, the collaboration paved the way for faster iteration cycles and reductions in certification time. Symbio was expected to understand and identify recurring problems incurred by manufacturers so that they could communicate common problems and issues back to Microsoft for improving later generations of the platforms.
Microsoft received a certified team, which ramped quickly to meet the needs of the early hardware manufacturers. The Symbio validation team has become experts on identifying problems in both the hardware and software. In turn, the hardware manufacturers better understand the problems and issues discovered from Symbio’s testing validation and analysis. Symbio’s onsite team reduces overhead because it warrants a scalable team without increasing Micro- soft’s regional headcount.
By collaborating with Symbio, Microsoft has been able to focus their resources on development, all while maintaining a sensible cost structure and elite support for their hard- ware manufacturers. Based on the increasing demand and partner feedback, Microsoft intends to expand the Symbio Validation Team.
