SHOP.COM, headquartered in Monterey, CA, is a leading global ecommerce marketplace ranked #59 on the Internet Retailer’s top 500 Guide®. The company powers marketplaces in 10 different countries and supports a data base of nearly 100 million products worldwide. SHOP.COM sells their own branded beauty, health and nutritional products and provides customized websites for 180,000 global independent distributors across the web.
While SHOP.COM has a strong technical staff and a scalable architecture, they had a backlog of revenue generating projects, and also lacked the IT resources to quickly execute on some key projects. Having hired most of the IT talent in Monterey, and being located more than an hour from Silicon Valley, SHOP.COM experienced diffi culty sourcing the engineering resources needed for their projects. SHOP.COM partnered with Symbio, and outlined a clear need to augment their existing team by integrating onshore and offshore resources with a goal of generating additional revenue.
In 2010, Symbio created a partnership with SHOP.COM that was grounded upon the need for experienced development resources that could help address the backlog of SHOP.COM’s revenue generating projects. To start, Symbio added a high performing onshore resource to SHOP.COM’s Monterey Team and augmented this with a team of 12 additional offshore developers. Symbio took over the development and maintenance of a set of tools that enabled SHOP.COM’s marketplace customers to update their product content without involving SHOP.COM’s internal IT team.
Symbio was able to gain deep experience with SHOP.COM’s scalable architecture as well as their internal business rules. As the relationship quickly evolved, the team was given additional projects to execute and Symbio took on additional mission-critical projects such as user generated content, merchandising tools, and QA automation to improve SHOP.COM’s efficiency.
Though versed in development processes, testing best practices, and technology, the key differentiators Symbio provided were the ability to partner with SHOP.COM and integrate as part of their team.
